Hi everyone! My name is Kiara Scrim, I’m a Public Relations student at Algonquin College. I am the Lord Elgin’s newest placement student, helping out with their social media sites, blog and other online channels. It’s very nice to meet you.
As I took my express bus to my first day this past Monday, I did not know what to expect. What will I be doing? Will everyone be nice? Will I be in the way? Am I wearing the right clothes? All these questions were answered within the first five minutes of arriving. As soon as I pushed through the revolving doors, John, one the bellman, gave me a warming smile and said hello. His friendliness lifted a weight off my shoulders and I immediately felt more comfortable.
Next, I heard the familiar sound of high heels coming my way. Ann, Director of Sales and Marketing (and my boss!) came around the corner. Ann was the first person I met at The Lord Elgin. She is a welcoming, warm-hearted and stylish. Ann truly cares about the people she works around. Her motherly instincts were shown today when she gave me not one, but two scarfs to wear as I left to walk the Rideau Canal.
I also had the opportunity to spend time with Tessa and Liz, as their desks are right next to mine. Liz is hilarious, honest and great at baking. Tessa is young, vibrant and easy to talk to. I am so grateful to be working in the same room as them!
Right now, as I sip on the coffee I got at the Starbucks attached, I feel very professional. I have my own desk in the sales office because Maxine is on maternity leave, and it is really adding to the experience. I will be here until April and hope I can bring a creative flare and energy to The Lord Elgin! I look forward to spending time with more of the staff, building their social media presence (including YouTube videos) and doing anything I can to help out my coworkers.
Looking forward to blogging again,
PS- The photo attached is of me and Winterlude’s favourite mascot, the Ice Hog! Today was the first day the Rideau Canal opened. Brrrr!

I have been maintaining The Lord Elgin Hotel’s social media sites for just about four months now. This is my main duty at the hotel and I love it so much! Each day I put up pictures, information and so much more onto Twitter and Facebook. Maintaining the pages is crucial, because before guests first come to the hotel, generally looking at the social media sites is an important tool. I really enjoy doing this job. The hotel is very unique and I like to show that on the social media sites. I try to share valuable information and I learn so much in the process. When I first started working at the hotel, I did not know anything about Twitter and now I could probably answer any questions about the website. Social media is a valuable tool and using it is very important. My absolute favourite part about working on the social media sites is putting my ideas out into the world and letting people know about the hotel! I have a wonderful opportunity here at The Lord Elgin Hotel and I feel honoured to represent the hotel in a big way.

We have had the pleasure of having a co-op student with us who has been a regular contributor to our blog, as you can see below. Her name is Ariana and she attends Glebe Collegiate. She also tweets for us and fills out facebook page with wonderful photos and cute stories, or comments…
As soon as I met Ariana and received her resume and an email, I was very anxious to meet her. Her co-op teacher called me and raved about her. We met one day and her enthusiasm and fabulous smile as well as incredibly positive nature was so impressive, I could not say no. I have had college students here doing their co-op placement, but never a high school student.
Well, Ariana is a special individual. She bikes or walks to the hotel each day, often with her father who keeps her company. She is incredibly conscientious – willing to give up playing with her volleyball team if it interfered with her work here. She is always so willing to try new things and so appreciative of her experience, as you can see in her blog. Her parents have raised her to be an incredibly considerate, hard working, fun-loving girl… kudos to them!
Ariana, you are like a ray of sunshine and a joy to have around – thank you!!!

I have been working at The Lord Elgin Hotel for just about three months now. It feels like just yesterday I walked into the lobby of the beautiful hotel. I remember that day perfectly and it has changed my life completely. I love being at the hotel. I learn something new everyday, I have met so many great people and I always have fun while doing it! I could not have asked for a better placement. Just recently I did a slideshow presentation about my time working at the hotel. This was a requirement for my Cooperative Education class. The presentation was successful and everyone really liked it. I enjoyed making the presentation because it allowed me to reflect on my time at the hotel. I had slides on the team that I work with and how wonderful they are. Other slides included what I have learned, what skills I need and how great my placement has been. I had a great time making it. I was so happy to share all of my experiences with my classmates and I loved hearing about their placements as well. It was a really fun project! I am glad that I still have one more month to learn and experience new things at the hotel, but I will miss it during the holidays!

Wow! I am so happy about the huge snowfall we had here in Ottawa! It is so gorgeous! When the snow stays on the ground like this, it is my favourite time of the year. I feel like a little kid again waking up, looking outside and seeing it fall to the ground. I am not quite sure why I like it so much. Perhaps, it is because a new season is coming along, or I feel like Christmas is near, but whatever it is, it puts me in a great mood! In order to get to the hotel, I have to bicycle in and let me tell you, it is no easy task. The snow is really slippery and it is only going to get worse when the ice comes along. But, I am just enjoying the weather while we have it. We are so lucky in Canada because we get a variety of seasons and by the time we get tired with one, another great one comes along. I am so thankful for this wonderful snow and I really hope it stays a while!

Each year my family and I go cut down our very own Christmas tree. It is always a huge mission. Unfortunately, this year it was raining, so it was a bit wet, but we managed. The first part of the adventure is driving to the tree farm. Once we arrive we have to pick one, this is the tricky part. Of course I always want a huge tree that will take up the whole room, but my parents disagree, they always try to convince me to get a really small one. So, we have to compromise on a medium size one and it always works out. This part of the adventure takes the longest, roaming around the farm trying to find the tree which will be in our home for the next month or so. Eventually, we find one that stands out. Not too big or small, no empty parts and just the perfect colour. I have to cut it down with the saw, which takes only a few minutes. Afterwards, we pile the tree onto the roof of our car and we are on our way.
Once we arrive at home, we are just about soaked completely, but we have to take care of a few other important jobs first. Get the stand out and place the tree in it, water it and make sure that the tree does not fall on anyone (this has happened before). Next, we have to deal with one of the more difficult parts, which is finding the good Christmas C.D. Each and every year we forget which one it is and this takes up a lot of our time. Once it is found, we can begin decorating our soaking wet tree. After that long process we are finished. Our tree looks incredible and even though it was a long and tiring job, it is all worth it in the end!

The Lord Elgin Hotel is definitely prepared for the holiday season this year! Everything is nicely decorated, Grill 41’s menu is ready and we are handing out holiday cookies in the lobby!! As soon as you walk into the hotel, you instantly can feel the Christmas spirit. It is wonderful walking around the lobby seeing how happy everyone is, it really is a great feeling! The Lord Elgin is all set for this fantastic season, but on the other hand I know that I still have a lot to do before the holidays. I have to figure out what people would like, buy gifts, wrap them, school work and so much more. But, all I keep thinking about is how in two weeks I will be with my family talking, eating and having a good time! I am very excited to relax after a busy year! It really is the most wonderful time of the year!

One of my favourite responsibilities at The Lord Elgin Hotel is helping the sales office with a variety of tasks. These duties include filings papers, addressing letters and even wrapping presents to go under the Christmas tree in the lobby. I really enjoy these jobs because I feel like I am a part of the team. Each project is completely different and I learn so much by working on each of them. They may be really small duties at the time, but in the long run they must be done. I find them so interesting! By doing these assignments, I get a better understanding of how the hotel works and the process that is required to ensure that everything runs smoothly. With each task I gain so much knowledge, while having fun, it is so wonderful for me! Every job I do at the hotel is a different experience and I have enjoyed every single moment of it!

Each week I work with the banquets team at least twice. It is so exciting seeing how conferences are really put together. There is always something to be doing, which makes it a different experience each day! The food has to be set out, coffee has to be prepared, decorations must be hung, and so much more. During the breaks the plates must cleared away and all of the water pitchers must be refilled to ensure a refreshing drink for the guests. There are so many things that go into preparing each room, but it is so much fun. I always enjoy helping out, it is such a rewarding job! Each person I work with has different tips for me and different ways of doing things. Each time help banquets I get better, but practice definitely makes perfect. The Lord Elgin Hotel ensures that each stay for every guest is perfect. By doing every little detail that we do while preparing the rooms, it makes it worth it. Thank you to everyone who has helped me in banquets!

Every once in a while I have to report back to school and have an in-class session. Even though it is only one day, I still miss coming into the hotel. During this class time we have a potluck and tell stories about each of our placements. It is nice to see all of my friends who I have not seen in a long time and catch up. It feels so different going to school, it is such a different environment. At the hotel I get to see everything that happens, from every angle and it is so exciting. At school I sit in a classroom learning and taking notes, which is also exciting, but I prefer being at the hotel. When I go to class, I love sharing all of my stories with everyone and I love hearing everyone else’s too. Soon, I have to do my very first project for my Cooperative Education Class. I am going to have to make a slideshow presentation about everything I do at the hotel! Once I start working on the presentation, these blogs are going to come in very useful, because I can see everything I have done each and every week!
